Roadmap to Beta 1

Just a brief post on some of the planned fixes and features that I have in mind before ArmCom gets a ‘beta’ label. The major ones are:

  • fixing the handful of bugs, mostly related to display rendering, that continue to plague the game
  • adding a location marker on the campaign map that moves as the campaign progresses
  • adding weapon breakdowns and other types of collateral damage, as well as orders and rolls to attempt repairs/replacements
  • adding some helpful introductions to different mission types the first time they appear
  • adding more vehicle notes and images for Sherman variants as well as enemy units
  • adding more sound effects
  • adding rank promotions for your commander
  • changing the colour of terrain based on weather and season

My hope is that Beta 1 will be a complete, playable game, without too many rough edges. Once that is done, I have in mind several important changes to the gameplay that will take a little more time to develop, but which I think will greatly improve the game. These include:

  • pop-up missions on the campaign map
  • a different system for counterattack missions that allows you to move around the map and which tracks enemy advances
  • new terrain types, rivers, and bridges
  • being able to track the specific units in your battlegroup, allowing them to gain levels, and giving specific orders to units during battles
  • adding more narrative detail to your crew

I have no idea what kind of timeline these changes will have; this is very much a hobby project for me, but I hope to complete the pre-beta changes in the next couple of months. After that, the plan is to have updates come less frequently, so people can play through longer stretches of campaign without being tempted to update and lose compatibility with their saved game!
